Better for Her

March 5, 2020

This is a poem I wrote for someone who means more to me than they know. Someone I think about often, cry about sometimes, and love very deeply.

There when I needed you,

With all the wrong words,

Learned early on,

You'd always come first.

When she was small

Was it a blur?

I've always hoped

You were better for her.

Christmas tree was sparse,

Broken drywall on the stairs.

Made me accept the watch.

Ignore it, don't repair.

Each year snowflakes fell

was she safe and secure?

I've always hoped

You were better for her.

Defense attorney scolds me

"Answer yes or no"

Police took a statement,

I reference that and go.

Frosty drive home,

Smooth it all over.

I've always hoped

You were better for her.

Better off without her,

Worse off without you.

Didn't know how to have both,

Never stopped loving you.

Think of you all the time,

Hope one day I'll hear

She was better for you

All of these years
