Grammar Police

September 21, 2019

I used to be the known by my younger brothers as the "grammar police." Language, I believe is powerful. It is the expression of our thoughts, the articulation of our ideas, and it can hurt or heal depending on how it is used. Choosing our words carefully matters...using language is an action. But I have made a conscious effort on this blog to (despite my internal protests) not correct my posts after hitting "publish." I will make mistakes, both in content, and in grammar/punctuation, but I want those to remain as they are. I want this blog to be imperfect, and I want this space to be real. As I have gotten older I have realized that it is the spirit of the words that matters, the intention behind them, and the willingness of the author to be teachable beyond their intention. When I focused on someone's use of the wrong to/too, all it did was shift my mindset into the critical. I know when to use to vs too, your vs you're, etc. and so do most. So I want to leave the instances that I mess that up here for all to see. Because my hope is that people will pay more attention to the content and spirit of the blog.
